Biostack – Can You Still Get One?
Even though I couldn’t find a place to buy the original Biostack made by Smith & Hawken, there are other vertical composters that use the same concept. (See link below for the Soilsaver Classic Composter on Amazon). This is designed for making your own compost in your backyard. I thought I’d share how it works.
With the Biostack, you had to remove each frame one at a time. The advantage of the Soilsaver is you simply move the entire unit at once and refill – starting at the top of the old pile and working your way down. This effectively turns, stirs and aerates the pile. In my opinion, this unit looks neater than a tumbler.

Great to get the scoop on the Biostack. Simple enough concept. Many thanks!
I wonder why they didn’t keep making this thing. It seems like a lot of people are looking for it. Good to learn about other alternatives.
Glad to find out about alternatives to the biostack. Would like to keep getting updated on products like this.
Some people say who needs these sorts of things to do composting? It’s true, you don’t have to have something like this, but if it helps you to do it – then I say get one. Whatever you need to do to get the job done. For smaller composting piles I think it makes a real difference.
